Why is it important to make websites accessible for devices?
Ensuring websites are accessible to multiple devices is becoming increasingly important. It is not just the personal computer with a web browser that can dip into the Internet anymore. Mobile devices, such as phones and PDAs are able to access websites. These devices bring about another dimension to web viewing! Suddenly, we are viewing a site on a tiny screen size with limited real estate. Websites that are optimised for viewing on 800x600 personal computer displays, are now having to accommodate visitors with small mobile devices.
In addition to mobile devices, we are seeing leisure electrical goods embracing the Internet. WebTV is an aspect of Internet browsing that is only going to increase in popularity and support as time goes by. We are seeing games consoles such as the XBox providing access to the Internet. These are yet more platforms to support.
It is not beyond the realms of possibility to support these varying devices without resorting to multiple website versions. It does mean that conforming to standards is going to become more important and that site design will need to be approached with a greater degree of flexibility.
